Things couldn't have been more perfect for this gorgeous King Country family photography session. The setting was the family’s spectacular farm just out of Piopio, with green rolling hills, little lakes and dams scattered around the property, prize-winning daffodils, and spring lambs. I was buzzing with excitement as I drove up the driveway.
After meeting the family and seeing their outfit choices, I was even more thrilled. They were down to earth, friendly, and fun, and had chosen outfits that tied together perfectly while still showing their individual personalities and styles.
For the next couple of hours, we wandered around the farm, chatting and laughing and watching two-year-old Saskia run and play. We grabbed a few fairly formal family portraits, with the evening light filtering through grandma’s prize-winning daffodils, then focused on the love and connections between the three of them as they chatted and played together.
The beautiful farm belongs to Saskia’s grandparents, and these three have lived and worked here for all of Saskia’s life. The farm was as much a subject of the photography session as the family was, and their tribe of dogs were extended family members who had to feature as well. Throw in a few spring lambs, which Saskia loves to cuddle and feed, a few guitars and a rifle, and this photo shoot was about much more than just what the family looks like. This is the story of their life.
Does your family have a happy place that is part of your story? Your own property, your favourite holiday destination, or your local beach? I’d love to hear your ideas for how it could be incorporated into a lifestyle photo shoot!
